<image:caption>Alexandra Kozak Painter Alexandra Kozak is a Fernie-based artist mainly focused on portraying the essence of local environments. She studies nature throughout seasons, and conveys her reverence in paintings bursting with liveliness and rich colour. Her work translates the multi-dimensional language of the natural world. She does this by immersing herself in the wilderness and painting outdoors as often as possible. She experiments with various media in her practice, including most painting mediums and pyrography. She graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in design. Her studies were focused on illustration and animation. Illustration taught her to gather & distill information, which guides her fine art practice. Her animation experience brings movement and rhythm to her work. Ms. Kozak’s whimsical and unique style imbues each piece with it’s own spirit. She is a visual storyteller and has also been developing a graphic novel set in Fernie.</image:caption>

She married and settled here to raise three children. The Byrne household has welcomed many young people besides their own to enjoy one of Alice’s home-cooked meals. Alice is an enthusiastic gardener, an avid skier and has endless energy. <image:title>Fernie Arts Co-op Artists - Natalie Tretyak</image:title>
<image:caption>Natalie Tretyak Feltmaker Natalie is a feltmaker based in Fernie, BC. Originally from Siberia Russia, Natalie started working with felt in 2015. Her eco-friendly felted projects use wool, fleece, silk and other natural fibers. She makes felted clothes as well as wall hanging art pieces and interior design objects. “Felting is great because of how many different things could be made using this old traditional technique. Our ancestors used wool to make clothes and shoes, carpets and blankets. They covered their homes with felt and wrapped their babies to keep them warm. Nowadays, not only feltmakers use wool to create clothes that look more like wearable art, they use it as a medium to create paintings, art objects and interior decorations. Most of Natalie's projects are seamless wet felt, which means that 3D shapes are created without sewing or otherwise connecting the pieces together. The wet felt is made by spreading wool fibers on a template, wetting them with soapy water, and then rolling and working by hand like dough until it binds to make seamless fabric. Felt has amazing fabric qualities, plasticity and limitless sculptural potential while wet and it also keeps the shape when it dries out. This wonderful medium can be shaped into pretty much anything”. Natalie has been learning a lot from great textile artists and feltmakers to develop her skills. She also shares her techniques with others at her workshops teaching how to make felted wearable pieces like hats, scarves, mittens, etc.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Helena De Jong Potter Helena is a self-taught potter living in beautiful Fernie BC with her husband and two children. She draws inspiration from the mountains and rivers around her home, the earth in her backyard, a childhood on the west coast, and the magic that is life through her little ones’ eyes. Helena has been making pottery casually since 2013 but is now pursuing ceramics part-time. Her other artistic interests include quilting, sewing clothes for her children, and creating stained glass with her mom. She loves teaching workshops and working with the Fernie Potters Guild to help build up the local ceramics community!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Caroline Payne Potter Caroline first tried ceramics while finishing her degree in Creative Writing at the University of Victoria. She took Ceramics as an elective in her final year and was immediately drawn to the tactile and physical nature of the art form. She knew immediately that she had to pursue pottery and began volunteering on the production line of a local studio in Victoria. After gaining some more experience, she decided to apply to Ceramic Art School and after acceptance, moved to Nelson to pursue Ceramics full time. Post graduation she got a position as Pottery Studio Manager at the Fernie Arts Station and moved back to Fernie to begin her role. She now works out of the community studio she also manages and makes her work on her days off. Caroline is inspired by fairy tales and whimsy. She hopes her art can brighten peoples days and bring a little magic to their lives!</image:caption>

Photographs are about feelings, they can tell a visual story or reveal a glimpse of natures beauty which I like to share. It is very gratifying when a viewer can connect with my imagery. Along with landscape and nature, I also enjoy both candid and traditional portraiture and wedding photography. My photographs have been published in Our Canada Magazine and the Fernie Fix.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Fernie Arts Co-op Artists - Ric Fedyna</image:title>
<image:caption>Ric Fedyna Painter This is me. I mean him... Driven by adventure and inspired by nature, Ric Fedyna creates art that is informed by his experiences in the wild. He is an adventure seeker that paints, or rather; a painter that seeks adventure. He spends his time in the wild patiently observing the patterns of nature, the movement of animals, the sunrises and sunsets sweeping across the Western Canada landscapes. All this magic comes to life on canvas in his studio in southern BC. He loves to share stories of his adventures, the land and his experiences with the majestic creatures he paints. Ric will never let go of his passion for painting and his quest for adventure. It's what feeds his soul. He hopes to leave a legacy of art that will be passed on for generations. Ric rarely refers to himself in the third person. Unless of course he is writing his own bio for the Fernie Arts Co-op. ;-)</image:caption>

Anne Aitken Anderson is a long time Elk Valley resident and emergent artist, who loves to experiment with different mediums and loosely capture the emotion of the beautiful surrounding landscape. <image:caption>Jamie Hide Photography Photography is an opportunity to take part in the wonder of the world around us. It entices us to observe and reflect on the simple and magnificent beauty that our environment and its people bring into our lives each day. Some images are the result of careful composition and arrangement, yet so many more moments are spontaneous and ephemeral; the photographer needs to be ready and open to take advantage of his or her life experiences and to translate them into images of meaning and magic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Launstein Family Wildlife Photography John, Jenaya and Josiah Launstein are part of a family of internationally awarded wildlife and conservation photographers and artists from the Pincher Creek area in southwestern Alberta. Their work has been widely published and exhibited in more than 70 countries at national museums and galleries, including the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The Launsteins’ oldest daughter, Jenaya, became only the second young woman to be named Youth Photographer of the Year, and her younger brother Josiah is clearly following in her footsteps! By age 14, he has twice been named the international Young Outdoor Photographer of the Year. They are delighted to share their love of wild animals and wild places with fellow nature and art lovers through their Fine Art Limited Edition & Open Edition Prints, calendars and greeting cards, and are honoured to have their work being sought after by collectors around the world. A quote Jenaya accompanying her work in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History sums up the family’s passion for what they do: “I hope my pictures help people care more about the animals I have the privilege of photographing.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kari Lehr Painter A graduate of the Alberta College of Art (now known as Alberta University of the Arts) in Calgary, Kari Lehr lives and paints in the beautiful Crowsnest Pass, Alberta. After a 20-year career illustrating for various agencies, studios and corporations around North America, she now pursues her own vision out of her Coleman studio, working primarily in acrylic, often incorporating mixed media. About Kari's Wild Things series: I have always found comfort in the natural world, including a fascination with wild creatures and spaces. Bears in particular have captured my imagination from childhood, where they were often present in the periphery of my dreams. I feel a connection to bears, and hope that through my paintings, the viewer too will connect to the joyful sense of respect and admiration I feel for them and all things wild.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Tathlina Lovlin Potter While growing up in Yellowknife, Tathlina Lovlin discovered pottery through the Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Craft at 8 years old. By the age of 15, she was teaching the kids class through the Guild and managing the open studio time on weekends. In 2000, Tathlina enrolled in Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. Through her university years, she continued pottery as a balance to a busy course load. In 2006, she and her husband moved to the Elk Valley. For 10 years, she worked for the coal mines while producing pottery from her basement studio. In 2016, she left the mining industry to stay at home with her kids. Around the same time she started teaching wheel classes through the Elkford Arts Council for both adults and children. With almost thirty years of throwing experience, Tathlina has started expanding her hobby studio into a business from her home. Based out of Elkford, she can be found at several local Farmer’s markets in the area, and on Facebook at Tathlina’s Pottery.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Karen Tamminga-Paton Painter – Acrylic/Mixed-Media The subject matter of Karen’s paintings reflect what has influenced her life: big, noisy immigrant family, years of teaching high school fine arts and environmental stewardship; her wanderings along back-country trails, and the many conversations about faith and the human condition over a good artisan beer with friends. When life gets really complicated, though, she’s quite happy just painting trees. Her painting studio is in Historical Downtown Coleman. Karen lives with her husband, Dale, in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, where they raised three daughters and share the land with 2 dogs, 2 ducks and a growing population of gophers.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Fernie Arts Co-op Artists - Millie Barnett</image:title>
<image:caption>Millie Barnett Felter Teaching in the Arctic and other schools enabled me to draw from a broad base of life experiences when I started designing teddy bears 30+ years ago in Saskatchewan. We raised sheep and used the wool in knitting products for my early stuffed animals. After retirement, I continued making teddy bears while living in the Kootenays. I was a founding member of the Fernie Arts Co-op. Originally the bears were made from fabric & fur coats. Design of the bears, rabbits, and moose evolved over the years. Today they are made by using a special barbed needles, thus creating one-of-a-kind felted animals. Fibre in these products are now individually carded and blended with mohair, alpaca, llama, and wool. Felted eyes have replaced glass eyes. There is no duplication in the sculptured animals. Each is one-of-a-kind. Felting is a centuries old method of making fabric. I have taken this ancient technique and applied it to designing and needle felting these unique products. Over the years these collectables have found homes around the world.</image:caption>

My purpose is to make something useful and beautiful while being less of a consumer and keep a little more waste out of our landfills. I am inspired by walks in the woods, finding treasures in the forest, and staying outside until there is absolutely no sunshine left in the summer sky! Feathers, bird calls, and mysterious bones are what I hold dear while I see these hats on my ancient sewing machine in my little house in the mountains. <image:caption>Michael & Anie Hepher Letterpress Printer, Textile and Fibre artist Married in creativity and general mischief, Anie Radish (Hepher) and Michael Hepher have been working hard to bring the love of color, fibre, print and song to Fernie since 2011. Anie Radish is Kootenay kid having lived somewhere between the Selkirk, Purcell, and Lizard mountain ranges since 1995. She is a self-taught sewist, knitter, embroiderist and comes from a long line of makers and creatives. Anie acquired her early stitching and needle skills (and the insatiable love of making), on the lap of her seamstress mother and a bold home economics teacher. Anie loves to make whimsical things to hold and behold. She tunes into the channel of useful, playful and comforting in her line of crochet goodies and handmade clothing. Her creations rely on bold colour choices: upcycled, local and organic materials are used whenever available. Anie loves to bring connection between all generations and loves how the slow process of craft and stitching is something for all ages to appreciate. Find out about her latest makes on Instagram: @radishandpatch Michael Hepher is an interdisciplinary artist working as a letterpress printer, wood engraver, oil painter, and illustrator. His work seeks to explore an alternate line of sight from common views—showing a bold and playful version of our surroundings. Through the use of strong shapes, rich colour, and graphic line work, he parses internal and external landscapes into a unique iconography of community and nature. His work strives to show the machinery of our natural systems in contemporary ways that reveal their underlying interconnectedness and showcase their invisible complexities in a way that makes them discoverable by a diverse set of viewers. Jeanne and Jodie use pre-loved wool sweaters to make something warm to keep you cozy in the winter, stuffed animals for the young at heart, or a pair of memory mittens made from the sweater or blanket of a loved one. Avery took up string art years ago and now makes beautiful, intricate, one of a kind pieces of art. Jodie is grateful to be raising her children next to her parents, and Avery is grateful to be able to raid grandma’s sewing stash whenever needed.</image:caption>

The connection between horses and leather being obvious, upon moving to Fernie in 2011, Holly started hanging out with an old cowboy named Brian Ironmonger (from “Brian’s Saddle Shop” fame). With these casual lessons, began a love of tooling, cutting and experimenting with leather. <image:caption>Harman & Bev Delyea Painter & Stained Glass Artists Harman is a self-taught artist and an avid outdoorsman. He started sketching with coloured pencils and went on to paint wildlife in acrylic. He enjoys recreational times with outdoor activities in the Rocky Mountains. His interests were studying and observing the natural world from an early age. Early in his painting experience, he was awarded for a life-like presentation of wildlife at a juried art show in Cranbrook. In 1993, a painting was selected to appear in an exhibition of contemporary B.C. artists. In 1994, a painting was chosen as a finalist for the B.C Visual Art Show. One of his works was one of three finalists selected from across Canada for the back cover of Readers Digest Magazine. Over the years, his paintings began to include landscape paintings and fishing, birds and flowers of the Rockies. Harman is an exhibiting member of the Canadian Federation of Artists. Bev is a Fernie resident who creates one-of-a-kind mosaics, mostly using stained glass. Her first mosaic—a framed mirror was created in a workshop taught by Ilona Webster and Bev has been doing mosaics ever since. An open mind and enjoyment of multiple forms of art result in a painting-with-glass style of landscapes, florals, impressions, abstract art, and interpretive works in two and three-dimensional works. She also employs pebbles, beads, and found objects in her mosaics, reflecting a sense of place and her love of colour. One of her mosaics was awarded first place for an emerging artist in an East Kootenay juried art show and another mosaic was featured in a mosaic art book “How to Mosaic” by Bonny Fitzgerald.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Fernie Arts Co-op Artists - Van Colden</image:title>
<image:caption>Van Colden Painter Van currently lives and works in Fernie. She grew up in a small Acadian village in Cape-Breton, Nova Scotia, known as Isle Madame. She was a practicing sports physiotherapist for many years, spending much of her time studying movement, however, she now spends most of her days with paintbrushes. She is a self-taught artist working in oils, launching her art career in 2020 with a solo show, “Shredding with the Littles,” at the Fernie Arts Station. Inspired by the views as well as the outdoor family life Fernie offers, Van paints whimsical landscapes, and everyday freeze frames, eliciting memories of fun family times at the ski hill. She is a firm supporter of active living and strongly believes that if we can get kids outside, the active side of things will work themselves out. She champions painting visual art of kids enjoying being active with the intent to have it ingrained in pop culture as a form of advocacy. Her artwork is featured in Karma Campervans, The Clairestone Inn (NS), La Picasse Centre Communautaire de Petit-de-Grat (NS), and Snowcreek Lodge, Fernie. Her “Safe Keepers” image was part of a collaborative fundraising effort with Blackdog Cycle and Ski in Kimberley for the Kimberley Volunteer Ski Patrol. Her pieces can be found in collections as far reaching as New Zealand, the United States, and from coast-to-coast in Canada.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kim Legge Fibre Artist Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, raised in Elliot Lake and Thunder Bay, Ontario, Kim flew the coop and moved to BC after college. First living in Vernon, then Kelowna, Pemberton, and Whistler, until settling in Fernie where she's lived for the past 25 years. Kim's always loved being creative, from a very young age, colouring, painting, drawing, and all sorts of crafting. When she was twelve, her mother hired a co-worker to teach Kim how to knit. She learned to knit by making a big fair isle sweater. That lesson was a wonderful investment in a lifetime of creativity and joy.. She's never been bored since! Kim has recently branched out into crocheting after fulfilling a lifetime goal of learning how to create granny squares like her maternal grandmother had made into afghans. Knitting and crocheting is a connection to the past, to family, to friends, with yarn being the tie that binds us. Kim loves the magic behind it - the way a single strand of yarn can be turned into a wearable piece of artwork! Working with all sorts of fibres fills her heart up - the colours, the textures, the warmth - it's an artform that creates warmth and coziness that passes from one person to the next.</image:caption>
